'New Moon' Director Chris Weitz Hasn't Seen 'Eclipse' Footage
30 Oct 2009
'I'm excited to see finished stuff from 'Eclipse' rather than anything in progress,' director says.
With filming on "Eclipse" wrapping up, we couldn't resist asking "New Moon" director Chris Weitz whether he had seen any of the footage from next summer's blockbuster. He hadn't, he said, because he's been busy working hard to bring fans "New Moon," which hits theaters in less than a month. Surprisingly, he said he didn't really want to see the footage yet.
"As a fan and a filmmaker, I'm excited to see finished stuff from 'Eclipse' rather than anything in progress," Weitz said. "When you see works in progress, there's always some guy standing in front of some big green curtain, and it's all terribly disappointing. You really want to see the good stuff once it's all finished."
After "New Moon" was finished filming , Summit Entertainment announced that David Slade would be directing "Eclipse." Weitz said he had some early chats with Slade to let him know what "New Moon" was going to look like and how he had filmed the story, and then let Slade decide how he wanted to film the series' third installment.
"It was like the transition team, so I could kind of let him know where things are going," Weitz said. "The transfer of power was very successful. The transition teams coordinated extremely well."

'New Moon' Director Chris Weitz Talks Bella And Jacob Kiss
30 Oct 2009
'I can assure you we're staying very, very close [to the book],' Weitz says.
"New Moon" trailers have established fairly clearly the basic premise of the film: Edward leaves Bella. Bella is sad. Jacob helps Bella feel better.
For anyone familiar with "Twilight," they know the central love story surrounds the human Bella Swan and the vampire Edward Cullen. It is the onscreen interaction between stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson that fans are paying their good money to see — to the point, Bella's aural hallucinations in the novel have become visual onscreen, so that the two can have more screen time.
So fans were a bit concerned when they saw what looked to be a kiss between Bella and Taylor Lautner's Jacob Black in the second theatrical trailer. As a quick spoiler, in the novel Bella and Jacob do have an almost-kiss, but it is interrupted.
We asked director Chris Weitz if he fudged the book a bit to sneak in a full kiss between the most present "New Moon" stars.
"I can assure you we're staying very, very close [to the book]," Weitz said. "No one will feel that I have betrayed Edward and Bella's relationship."
Not to worry, "Twilight" fans. At least two "New Moon" trailers shows full-fledged kisses between Bella and Edward, so the film's romance quota has been filled at least twice. It won't be until "New Moon" hits theaters November 20 that we find out if there are any other Bella-and-Edward smooches that have not been revealed.
For more from the "New Moon" cast and to see an exclusive clip from the film, check out MTV's "Ulalume: Howling at New Moon" on Friday, October 30, at 9 p.m. ET — and check MTV.com at 10 p.m. to see the clip exclusively online!

'New Moon' Director Wants to Make Fans Cry
28 Oct 2009
With New Moon ready to rise in theaters Nov. 20, director Chris Weitz wants it known: He is going to try to make you cry.
"We've tried our best to deliver on the romantic scenes in the film, and I would like to be able to produce more tears than any movie before, if possible," Weitz told PEOPLE at the Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Awards Monday of capturing moments in the Twilight saga's love triangle. "If we could only weigh them with some kind of cubic tear measure!"
Weitz, who took over the directing reigns from Catherine Hardwicke, admits delivering the passion, thrills and heartache in the hotly anticipated sequel wasn't easily done.
"I've handled it very badly, because I'm extremely envious of Rob [Pattinson] and Taylor [Lautner]," he said laughing. "What I've realized is that they have a very tough job – not just playing the characters that they play, but living lives that are now very much under scrutiny all the time."

'New Moon' Director Chris Weitz Calls Dakota Fanning's Jane 'Bad News'
28 Oct 2009
'She had some fun playing, really, the most evil of all the bad guys,' Weitz says of the actress.
Next month's "New Moon" release features a number of changes from its sequel's debut this time last year. There's new director Chris Weitz; a new cast of characters, including bad vampires and a wolf pack; and Taylor's Lautner's 30 pounds of muscle.
But one of the most exciting changes from last year's "Twilight" is purely visual in nature: shooting the third act of the film on location in Italy.
"Wow, am I glad we were able to shoot there," Weitz said with a laugh in a recent phone interview with MTV News. "We went to about 12 different hilltop towns in Tuscany, which was both delightful and exhausting, because it had to be done relatively quickly. Montepulciano had the most symmetrical main square that I could find, so that was the winner for that reason."
Fans can expect about 20 minutes of the film to be spent in Italy or in interior shots set in Italy. While trailers released for "New Moon" show hints of flashbacks featuring the Volturi, Weitz said most of the time is dedicated to the present day.

Q&A: Chris Weitz
20 Oct 2009
The Hollywood Reporter has a new interview posted with Chris Weitz:
The Hollywood Reporter: Why did you want to do a "Twilight" movie?Read more
Chris Weitz: The tonality of the movie, which has a lot to do with heartbreak and longing, depression and reunion and ecstasy -- these were emotions that struck a chord in me. I really loved the cast; Kristen (Stewart) and Rob (Pattinson) both are exceptionally talented. And I wanted to get my hand back in the game. There were a lot of things in this movie that I knew how to do: A combination of telling a character-based story but also handling special effects and working with young actors.
THR: And adding another genre of film to your resume?
Weitz: It gets a bit boring to be in a particular zone. I like the idea of switching genres and different types of stories to keep things interesting. But it might be the way to become unmemorable as a director, I suppose. There aren't that many dilettante directors who get remembered. John Ford did all kinds of movies. Billy Wilder did too, but they get remembered for one particular kind.

Paul And Chris Weitz Find A Blood Bond
18 Oct 2009

The LA Times has a nice article about Chris Weitz and his brother Paul Weitz. The article talks about both directors, their relationship, and their work on different vampire movies:
That Chris considers himself "a slave to the text" of the projects he adapts could work in his favor only when it comes to "New Moon." The books in author Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series have a wildly devoted following that helped push Catherine Hardwicke's 2008 movie to record-breaking box office grosses (it brought in $365 million worldwide). Those fans already are clamoring for the next installment, with screenings for the movie selling out earlier than for any other film to date, and Chris said he understands what they're expecting him to deliver.Read more
"What they want is a faithful rendition of the book, so that's really my job," he said.
Which is just fine with him. Chris said he actually "enjoys the restraints that are imposed by my constituency." He's particularly fond of adapting works of literature because he's an avid reader -- he studied English at Cambridge's Trinity College -- but for other reasons as well: "It's probably that I'm afraid to do my own stuff because I feel like people might not take it seriously," he said. "I have difficulty believing my own characters. I always think I can see right through them and everyone must be able to."
