'New Moon' Director Weitz Names Next Project
27 Jul 2009
"Twilight Saga: New Moon" director Chris Weitz is ready for a different speed, now that filming and finishing the soon-to-be mega-hit is just around the corner.
"I'm rather lazy and I get tired after a while, waking up at six in the morning," he laughed during roundtable interviews at the San Diego Comic-Con. Instead, he's decided to take up a "small movie," after this one's out.
"It's called 'The Gardener' and it's about a Mexican gardener," Weitz said. "And I'm not joking. It sounds like a joke movie, but it's not."
Directing the third "Twilight" movie was out of the question, "impossible without serious disjunction" due to scheduling. But he said there will be some noticable stylistic differences between the first film, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, and his "New Moon."
"I like classical films, I'm kinda an old fogey in that way. Catherine... is very much more contemporary. This will look and feel like an old romance."

Talking With 'New Moon's Chris Weitz, Ashley Green and Melissa Rosenberg!
26 Jul 2009
We were lucky enough to chat with New Moon director Chris Weitz, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and star Ashley Greene during New Moon's Comic-Con takeover. They had a lot to share about onscreen chemistry, creating the wolves, and Taylor Lautner's resemblance to a certain Greek god.
Chris, what were the challenges of adapting a Twilight book?
Weitz: In terms of the visuals, just sort of combining a sense of, I mean the last film I did [The Golden Compass] was set in a parallel universe, so we could reinvent the wheel. This one's not only set in a very specific place, and in some ways a very workaday place, but also a place that had already been established in the previous film. And then to take it to flights of fantasy, the Volturi. Really, to be honest, its hiring someone like David Brisbin who is a genius production designer and Javier Aguirresarobe the D.P. who shot things in such a beautiful way. We were able to take a world that had already been established and put it in a setting that is just incredibly rich, and I think it's quite beautiful.
We know the characters are close to people's hearts, but Kristen and Robert have become true superstars, what do you think is the secret of their appeal?
Rosenberg: Personally for me, it's how genuine they both are. They're both very authentic people; that comes across on the screen.
Greene: They have great chemistry.
Rosenberg: They're chemistry is incredible together, I mean visually as well. I think that sets them apart.

24 Jul 2009
At the Examiner, a full transcript from the fan conference has been posted. The videos to this transcript were also on the last post. Thanks to Paris for bringing the transcript to my attention!
Just to flip that question, what personality traits do you have in common with your "Twilight" character?
Pattinson: [He says to Weitz] How am I like my character?
Weitz: I noticed that you’re very cold to the touch and have skin like marble and that you glow like a diamond when the sun hits.
Pattinson: I look a bit like him [Edward Cullen].

Hitfix Exclusive: 'New Moon' Director Chris Weitz Reveals All
18 Jul 2009
Hitfix recently did an extensive interview with Chris Weitz discussing 'New Moon'. Here are some interesting facts and information they got out of him:
*Even Weitz was surprised with how quickly Phil Tippet's company turned around the Jacob wolf shot at the end of the first teaser trailer. The shot has gone through numerous iterations and is much more photorealistic than that version.Read more
*He'll be submitting a director's cut of the film to Summit within the next two weeks.
*Alexandre Desplat is currently working on the movie's score. It may include hints at Carter Burwell's original "Twilight" theme, but will sound different.
*Thom Yorke and Kings of Leon are interested in contributing to the film's soundtrack.
*A couple of new scenes from the film will be shown during the "New Moon" Comic-Con panel on Thursday, July 23.
*The movie within a movie, "Facepunch," will only be heard -- not seen.
*Shooting in Italy with all of the fans that trekked across Europe to see the production was like Beatlemania.
*His vision of the Volturi is very much like the book and unlike a number of fan inspirations that have hit the web. He also sees them as having gone slightly insane after living for 2,000 years.
*He's met with David Slade and expects the filmmaker's vision for "Eclipse" to be different than what he's doing with "New Moon," but with the same actors and visual effects team.
*He's flattered that fans want him to direct "Breaking Dawn" without seeing "New Moon," but thinks the fans will want Slade to do it by the time "Eclipse" comes out.
*Weitz needs to turn the film in by Oct. 30 to strike prints or if not, they are in "big trouble" to make the release date.

On The Set: 'New Moon' On The Rise
16 Jul 2009
The LA Times has a great long article discussing 'New Moon', and also has a new movie still of Bella and Jacob!
Many hours have been spent waiting for the sun to emerge from Vancouver's perpetual cloud bank. This week, Weitz and his team have been trying to film one of the few outdoor sequences that require bright natural light, but since the notoriously difficult British Columbian climate has refused to cooperate, the "New Moon" cast and crew are about to spend the better part of a 12-hour day inside the elaborate fiction of an Italianate marble hall complete with columns and engravings in Latin. Where else, after all, would the Volturi reside?
Today, that vampire ruling council is ruminating over the fate of Edward and Bella. Walking forward with his arms extended, Aro, played by British actor Michael Sheen, sporting blood-red contact lenses, offers a vaguely sinister greeting to his reluctant guests. The scene is replayed over and over, with Pattinson at one point leaving the set to consult with Weitz about a particular line of dialogue.
Standing by the monitors, the pair runs through a number of options while Stewart sits on the floor looking a little bored as she waits for the cameras to resume rolling. After several minutes, Pattinson, wearing a long, red robe and fake bruises painted beneath his eyes, returns to his mark and filming resumes.

Chris Weitz Takes The Twilight Helm With New Moon
10 Jun 2009
After the success of Twilight last year, New Moon - the latest film adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s book series - is one of the most hotly anticipated movies to be released this year. Leading the production is director Chris Weitz, who is taking his first stab at the franchise.
Q. How does it feel to take over directorial duties of such a successful franchise?
A. On the one hand, it’s exciting to take over a successful franchise. On the other, it’s daunting. There are so many fans who have high expectations for this film, but it’s made easy by the fact that I inherited this amazing cast who are certainly very talented. So half of the time, I’m just overjoyed to be a part of this and the other half, I’m nervous that I’m going to be hunted down and killed by a pack of 14-year-old teenage girls in about a year’s time!
Q. What was your reaction when you were first offered the job?
A. I was surprised because it happened very suddenly, and I had a week and a half to decide whether I was gong to do it or not. Then I saw the first film, I saw the case and I thought, 'This is going to be great, actually. Kristen, Rob and Taylor were great' - that’s what convinced me to do it. And I read the book and I thought I saw my way of making a good version of the book. It’s really a question of whether I can do justice to the book and to please the readers. That’s my job. It’s not to run away with it and just do my version of things. It’s to be faithful to their experience of reading it.

Hyped New Moon Cast Disses Original Director
08 Jun 2009
The best part of Twilight was Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Loved the books, but the movie...well. We think it could have been done a tad better—and I think the cast of New Moon agrees. That's why when we saw the trailer last weekend we were über-stoked because we could tell it was gonna kick butt.
Maybe having a different director, namely Chris Weitz, the second time around was the key.
And the cast seems to concur:
Peter Facinelli told the A.T.:
"When we shot Twilight, it felt like it was an indie. We were racing the clock. Catherine [Hardwicke] was fantastic, but with New Moon it felt like we had more time to play. The atmospheres were different. They were both great...in their own ways. I just think New Moon is going to be incredible."
Michael Welch also told us how better prepared they were to film from day one.
"When we all got on the set the first day, [Chris Weitz] gave us this packet of 30 to 40 pages of what he wanted the film to look and feel like—how he was going to shoot it, all of that stuff. The thing is, both Chris and Catherine—I don't want to say one is better than the other. They are polar opposites in terms of style. Catherine can only succeed in chaos, really. But Chris is the exact opposite; he's so calm and has all his stuff together. He really made this film great."

Michael Sheen Opens Up On ‘New Moon’ And Working With Director Chris Weitz
06 Jun 2009
There’s this little vampire movie coming out in November called “New Moon.” Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Among the new characters joining the series is Aro, one of three leaders of the Volturi coven, the largest organized group of vampires in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” universe. Michael Sheen (”Underworld: Rise of the Lycans,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Blood Diamond”) is the one stepping into Aro’s shoes for the silver screen adaptation of “New Moon,” and Empire recently had an opportunity to chat with him about it.
From the sound of things, Sheen enjoyed his time on the “New Moon” set. “It was great to work with Chris Weitz; it was a really funny set, really relaxed,” the actor told Empire. His part in “New Moon” is admittedly a small one, but Sheen spoke hopefully about working with Weitz again. “That might be the thing that I direct, I don’t know yet, you never know.”
He goes on to talk about his impressions of both his character and the “young, beautiful” cast that he worked with. It’s a brief interview, but enlightening stuff if you’re a “Twilight” fan. Which I’m guessing that a few of you are.
Are you familiar with Sheen’s other work? Excited about seeing the “Underworld” lycan reinvent himself in a “Twilight” vampire role? What might this directing project be that he speaks of?
